What a wonderful personal story you’ve shared! I love it. I have memories of my Mom using a little puff of powder too, and now that she is gone, that memory fills me with happy thoughts!

I can’t believe you included the powder puff. My mother (whose birthday is on Mother’s Day. The year she was born, 1942, it was Sunday, Mother’s Day that year) has never been a “girly girl”, not like me. She’s never been concerned about makeup, it was just a little bit of lipstick and maybe a little powder when she was young, but I don’t think she’s worn any in decades. She was concerned how she was dressed and looked, but couldn’t tell you a name brand of clothing to save her life, she was more concerned about quality. A former clothing inspector in her early days before she went into nursing a little later in life and it was a NIGHTMARE to go clothes shopping with her as a teenager. I would see something I wanted, what everyone else was wearing and I would hear, “just look at that, they can’t even match the plaids (or stripes) or whatever it would be”. Then it would usually be, “well I can make that for almost nothing!” Well NO teenager wants to hear that, THEY want the poorly made, far too expensive thing everyone else is wearing. Then I would remind her HOW so very busy she is. BUT…..there was ONE thing she did enjoy to pamper herself which I can remember her using as long as I can remember. A little cardboard round container of body powder with a puffy applicator. Over the years the scents and containers have changed. They’re becoming fairly difficult to find. I can’t begin to think how many Christmases that was the gift or part of a gift I gave to her. For years, it’s what my golden retriever Lucy gave to her as her “granddog” at Christmas. Last year as Lucy is gone, I had to make sure I gave it to her. Hopefully for this coming Christmas, a new granddog will be giving one to her. I may just have to think about one for Mother’s Day OR her birthday as they never last a full year. We always celebrate both events the same day as her birthday is always within a few days of Mother’s Day. (our family has this oddity about it, EVERY person’s birthday is either within 2 days of another family member’s birthday or its on another holiday or celebration. I guess it began with my mom, then I was born on their 1st anniversary. And so on it goes. I should have known the girl my nephew is dating, a fellow teacher, was ordained to become his wife when I discovered her birthday was Groundhog’s Day AND….TWO days after my little sister’s birthday. They WERE to be married on June 28th, the day before my parent’s anniversary and the day after the family member whom he’s named after’s anniversary. Sadly however, the decision was finally made this week to postpone it. We’re in Maryland and we’re not even CLOSE to having the state open enough to allow a large wedding to take place. BUT….true to form for our family, they picked the date of their first date AND the day he proposed. It’s never possible for us to just have one thing celebration on a day in our family. It’s the CRAZIEST thing.
