Discover more about the secret life of antiques: Whispers of the Garden: Antique Floral Door Stops.
Here at home, where ocean breezes often cause our doors to 'drift' and slam shut, an antique door stop is a very charming way to keep the doors open.
Blooming History
Introduced as early as the 1700's in Europe, doorstops really became popular in the 1800's in England and France. By the mid-1800’s, doorstops were practical and utilitarian, but also fashionable decorative items. Most of the door stop production was in the United States by the mid 1800's.
Passionate about all things floral {the more the better!} it's no surprise that the Victorian's love for the natural world extended to even these most functional of objects. Cast iron, a sturdy and readily available material, became the canvas for skilled artisans to depict roses in full bloom, graceful lilies, and whimsical bouquets.
A Bloom Through Time
A well-placed doorstop was essential for catching a cross-breeze on a warm afternoon, before air conditioning was installed. And what could be more cheerful than one shaped like a vibrant bouquet?
From the heavy cast iron beauties of the Victorian era, often adorned with meticulously painted roses or lilies, to the lighter, more stylized floral designs of the Art Deco period, each doorstop tells a story of its time.
American doorstops, particularly those made in the 1900's, were smaller and lighter than European door stops. A new doorstop in 1920 cost 25 cents. These days, very rare doorstops can sell for over $10,000!
The Allure of Floral Doorstops
What's so captivating about collecting doorstops adorned with flowers? They bring the beauty of the garden inside. Each floral design, whether realistically painted, intricately cast, or whimsically stylized, adds a little bit of natural charm to any room.
The details in these cast iron florals is beautiful. Not just functional items; doorstops were meant to add a touch of beauty to your home. Many vintage floral doorstops evoke a sense of nostalgia, reminding us of grandmothers' homes or simpler times. They can carry a quiet history and a comforting familiarity.
