Are ironstone talking plates primarily (or totally!) decorative? Can they be used for dessert (food safe)? No dishwasher?

Oh, these are my favorites!! I love find really cute ones. I also have a couple that have a saying on them that you have to interpret with some letters and pictures of things. They are quite a fun play on words in French. I have quite a collection here in France.

Thank you! Love this post, I have a small amount of these that I inherited from my French Mum. We have them on the walls in our kitchen in our country home in the Cotswolds, and I’ve loved learning more about them.

I wanted to come by and thank you for your visit, then I got caught up in your post. I’m the proud owner of four plates by Cloisy-le-Roi. I just happened to pick them up at an antique store for a song many years ago. I asked a blogger who had lived in France for a while and she interpreted the little story on my plates. I proudly display them in my Hoosier cabinet (the perfect place, wouldn’t you say? lol).
So glad we reconnected. Following you by email now. Oh…I LOVE your new profile picture, pretty lady!

I live in Texas, and I have not seen any of these in any of the antique shops I visit. I’m going to order some from you today! Do these come with other color bands, like red?

Such great information! I have bought a set of two from you but forgot what you told me about them. This fills in the blanks (my brain) again.

Julie, they are mostly decorative. It totally depends on the kind of glaze used. In France, everyone still uses them for food, but I’m not sure if some have tin glazes. No dishwasher, most likely!
