There are some antique necklaces that are wonderful because of one extraordinary element, and this is one of them. The Victorian gutta percha pendant is beautifully detailed, with the warm black-brown color and fine workmanship that make these early pieces so appealing. I paired it with a wonderfully unusual 36" chain of semi-precious beads in toffee, caramel, gold, and chameleon blue topaz, accented with antique rosary rose beads. The combination of earthy color and the dark gutta percha is unexpected and very beautiful.
Gutta percha was prized during the Victorian era for its lightweight, durable qualities and was used for jewelry as well as other decorative objects. I especially love the way this long beaded chain can be worn on its own or layered with another favorite necklace. The clasp has been replaced, as the original was no longer functioning well.
