Antique Staffordshire Spill Vase Lovers Under Tree with Bird
Details
An early 19th century Staffordshire spill vase that feels like a little scene pulled straight from a quiet romantic story. This charming piece has a young couple asleep in each others arms, under a tree. They are watched over by a blue bird as they dream of a cottage covered in roses. And yes, their tiny black shoes are part of the charm.
The tree has textured bocage in fresh greens and touches of red, the figures are hand painted in rich jewel tones with gentle gilt accents. The trunk is finished in a soft grey wash with a flash of gold that catches the light just right. This is one of those early Staffordshire pieces that still feels alive—imperfect in the best way, full of character and hand-done detail you don’t see anymore. There is a hairline on the back, likely from the original firing or early age-related stress, which is not unusual for pieces of this period. It does not distract from display and is reflected in the condition.
A lovely, increasingly hard-to-find example of early Staffordshire figural work with strong romantic presence.
- Measures 4-1/2" x 3" x 5-1/4" h.
