Details

A rare and remarkable early 19th‑century large blue and white Mazarin strainer or drainer, made in England during the first decades of the 1800's, most likely in Staffordshire. This exceptional piece features a charming central pastoral scene with shepherds, sheep, goats, sailboats, and exotic garden buildings — a design reminiscent of the finest early Spode patterns. The decorative floral and seaweed border frames the scene with graceful detail, creating a striking and elegant presentation.

This drainer would originally have been placed on a large serving platter so that the juices of beef, fish, or turkey could drain into the platter below at the table — a beautiful combination of utility and artistry that also makes it an engaging decorative display piece today. The stunning blue colors remain bright and glossy after more than two hundred years, a testament to the quality of its original craftsmanship.

Unmarked, as is common with early English pottery of this period, and carries professional edge repairs from earlier use — sympathetically done and visually unobtrusive within the busy floral border. Not too noticeable, it is most likely where the platter was fitted in a poorly constructed wire hanger for display for a century or more by the family. These repairs speak to its long history of cherished use and survival, and they do not detract from the impact of the design or its decorative appeal.

Collector’s Note

An exceptionally rare survivor of early Staffordshire-style pottery, this drainer is notable for its large size, finely detailed pastoral scene, and floral border, which are seldom found intact in pieces this large. Pieces like this, with over 200 years of provenance, are highly sought after by serious collectors of early 19th-century English ceramics. Its combination of decorative richness and functional form makes it both a display-worthy object and a representative example of the finest blue-and-white transferware of the period.
