Details

A charming Antique English Silver Plate Chocolate Pot by Hutton & Sons, dated 1902, a beautiful survivor from the Edwardian silver service era. This elegant chocolate server features a graceful reeded footed body, a lovely curved pouring spout, and the traditional hand-woven wicker handle, designed to protect the hand when serving hot chocolate. The hinged lid is topped with a domed finial and opens smoothly.

The underside bears the crossed arrows mark of Hutton & Sons, the respected Sheffield firm founded by William Hutton in Birmingham in 1800 and later established in Sheffield in 1832. The wicker handle remains in very good condition. There is one small indentation on the side, where the new lady's maid dropped it {she was so good at hair she wasn't dismissed.} A delightful and increasingly difficult to find piece, wonderful displayed as part of your silver collection.

Collector’s Note

Chocolate pots with insulated wicker handles were popular in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, when hot chocolate was served as part of formal breakfast or evening service. The wicker wrapping is a distinctive decorative detail that collectors love. Examples marked by Hutton & Sons of Sheffield, one of England’s most respected silver plate manufacturers, are sought after for their elegant forms and quality production. Early 20th century chocolate pots with their original wicker handles intact are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly those with clear maker’s marks and classic pedestal forms such as this example.
