A charming late 18th–early 19th century French hand-painted lacquer snuff box, decorated with an elegant pastoral scene of well-dressed figures gathered in conversation. The beautifully painted lid, glowing lacquered surface, and delicate gilt details make this a wonderful little example of the decorative boxes so prized in the Georgian era.
Originally made to hold snuff, small boxes such as this were personal accessories as well as objects of beauty, carried in a pocket or presented as gifts. This petite box would be lovely displayed in a vitrine, on a writing desk, or grouped with other antique boxes and small objets d’art. The lid was professionally repaired long ago, and this has been taken into consideration in the price.
