Antique Staffordshire Ironstone Maddox Pedestal Compote
Details
I love the simple elegance of this antique Staffordshire ironstone compote. Made by Maddox around 1880, it has a beautifully proportioned pedestal form with a generous, shallow bowl and a creamy white glaze that gives it an easy, timeless presence. The shape is wonderfully versatile—lovely filled with seasonal fruit, arranged with flowers, or left empty where its sculptural silhouette can be appreciated. Turn it over and you will find the impressed Maddox mark, a lovely detail that connects this compote to the long tradition of English Staffordshire pottery.
There is something especially appealing about an old serving piece that still feels completely at home today. I can imagine this on a kitchen island filled with pears, at the center of a dining table, or holding a collection of favorite treasures. It has wonderful antique character and is in very good condition, with only two small areas of loss along the underside of the rim, not visible from the top or side. A beautiful example of early English ironstone, and the kind of useful antique that becomes part of your home rather than simply something you display.
- Measures 8-5/8" x 4-7/8"h.
