Rare Pair of 18th Century Italian Baroque Hand-Carved Hanging Putti
Details
Originally carved for a church in late 18th century Italy, this exceptional pair of Baroque putti still retains the original iron hooks that once suspended them above the altar. Beautifully hand carved from solid wood, each cherub is full of movement and exquisite detail, from the expressive faces and softly curled hair to the individually carved feathers of their outstretched wings. The rich, aged wood has developed a wonderful patina over more than two centuries.
Their graceful scale makes them perfect for hanging above a mirror, doorway, or smaller painting, where their exquisite carving can be appreciated up close. They remain in very good antique condition with small losses to a few fingertips and feather tips, all consistent with their age and history. Not perfect, both are missing little fingers and little bits of the feathers, which is to be expected of pieces of this age. They can hook over a mirror or large painting and will enhance any collection.A rare opportunity to acquire an original matching pair of this quality.
- Measure about 13-1/2" l x 9" x 4". {largest}
