Lovely Antique Italian Micro Mosaic Floral Red Rose Brooch, with a wonderful and unusual hexagon shape, and a red rose in the center surrounded by smaller flowers. Made by the skilled Italian jewelry makers in the early 1900's, with intarsia mosaic work - the brooch is inlaid with glass tesserae from Murano, minuscule glass tubes, which imitate in miniature the glorious Byzantine mosaics of the Basilicas of Ravenna and Venice, Italy.
There is some wax showing in this earlier pin, later versions of this type of jewelry omitted the wax altogether, saving time, and lowering quality, as seen in the more recently produced pins. Marked on the back, closes with a c style clasp. A lovely addition to your jewelry collection.
