I love finding old tools like this—objects that were made for a very specific purpose, but have such wonderful form and character that they become decorative pieces in their own right. This antique French carpenter’s bench vise dates to the early 20th century and was made by M. Mercier, whose maker’s stamp is still visible.
The substantial wooden vise has a beautifully aged surface, plenty of honest wear, and a large screw carved from a single piece of wood. These traditional clamps were used by French carpenters and craftsmen for holding large pieces of wood securely while working. Today, this one would be just as wonderful displayed in a workshop, library, or collected home. It remains fully operational, so you can use it as intended—or simply enjoy it as a wonderful piece of French industrial history.
