Details

This antique English shellwork souvenir box, made in 1899,  is one of those Victorian treasures that feels especially romantic. Shaped as a heart and covered with delicate shellwork, it has a luminous abalone shell that catches the light beautifully, along with a pink silk heart-shaped pincushion on top that makes this one extra special. Open the box and there is another lovely surprise: the original pink paper lining inside!

Shellwork souvenirs were popular keepsake souvenirs sold in seaside towns and European port cities, and boxes like these were often brought home as sentimental gifts. Marked with its registration number for 1899 on the bottom. This one would be lovely on your dressing table, beside a stack of books, or displayed with your collection of antique boxes and cherished shells. The heart shape, glowing abalone shell, and bright pink silk give it a particularly feminine charm without making it feel overly sweet— a beautiful little piece of history with a story to tell.

Collector’s Notes.

Shellwork souvenirs were especially popular during the 19th century, particularly in seaside towns and European port cities.

They were sold as keepsakes for travelers and were often brought home as sentimental gifts. Heart-shaped examples are especially charming for the obvious connection to love, affection, and remembrance.
