1920's Boudoir Scheherazade Salon Doll

1920's Boudoir Scheherazade Salon Doll, a very rare costuming for an art deco era boudoir doll. Scheherazade is the eldest daughter of the tsar's vizier, a girl of rare beauty and intelligence in the One Thousand and One Nights stories. Our girl is dressed in long harem pants made of watered silk rose covered harem pants with metallic gold French trim, a metalic brocade vest covered with a silk velvet jacket with ribbon work trim and a cap made of French metallic lace featuring a large lace rose on one side. She wears a blue silk velvet belt tied in the back which is also embellished with the French metallic gold trim. These dolls were often sold without clothes and their new owner created exquisite outfits for them.

Her body is an apricot orange fabric, her face has hand painted features. Made by the American Stuffed Novelty Company, this exotic beauty is in good condition for her age. There are some spots on her feet as shown, and underneath her jacket her light yellow silk sleeves have shredded, but she is a beauty! French designer Paul Poiret is credited for starting the boudoir doll fad, the first dolls that were commercially available were found at a trade show in France that was part of the recovery process after WWI. These beautiful Dolls were considered to be “Art” Dolls or called Salon Dolls, and were avidly collected to decorate a lady's boudoir, lounging around on the bed all day, eating bonbons.
