Antique Chalkware Sheep Pair, bought in Europe, these late 19th century French Chalkware Putz Sheep are my weakness. Anywhere and everywhere, if I see chalkware sheep, I buy them! {I confess very few make it to the shop} But my flock is getting a little out of hand, so I’m happy to share a few for this season with you.
Little sheep like this were, at the time they were made, quite beloved to add to the nativity scene, a must for almost every Christian French family. These two are not perfect, one is missing her tiny ear, but they were probably carefully played with when nany wasn’t looking so it’s a miracle they are in the condition they are in. Small in size, huge in history, memories of a child’s wonder of Christmas. Use them for your own creche scene, or display on a stack of holiday books or on your mantel.
