Vintage French Bleuet Blue Painted Splint Basket, Country Gathering Basket

A beautiful piece of French provincial history, this hand-woven splint wood basket is an example of the traditional vannerie craftsmanship from the Normandy region of France. Traditionally used for gathering small fruits in a family orchard or farmstead of the North, this basket has a deep French Blue painted finish. 

Most likely painted by a color loving French homemaker, the inside has the rich, natural warmth of the hand-split wood—likely oak or chestnut—providing a striking contrast to the blue exterior. It’s a perfect size to display in many ways in your home.  

Collector’s Note

Sourced at a brocante, this vintage basket is made from traditional hand-split wood ribbons. The construction is sturdy, it has a beautifully curved stationary handle. The charming, weathered blue finish highlights the authentic texture of the weave—a perfect marriage of rustic utility and French decorative style.
