Victorian Pottery Jam Jar

Antique Victorian Pottery Jam Jar, made in 1901 by Wiliam Pickles (his mother’s maiden name) Hartley, who began his own grocery business at age 16 in the 1860's, and 1875 started manufacturing marmalade and jams in the North of England. Mr. Harley was a visionary, he built the workers for his jam company a beautiful village around the factory and gave them profit sharing in the Victorian era!

The crock or jar is a cream grey stoneware, with clear salt glaze, a perfect color, on the outside and inside. These jars were sold with a paper label pasted on the outside. Sold without lids, you can see the horizontal groove running below the rim where the string that kept the wax paper or cloth lid in place was tied. A delightful piece of history, to display with pride in your kitchen. It will happily hold your home made jam or marmalade {or buy it and serve in this!} a set of antique sterling spoons, or your latest bouquet of garden flowers.
