This rare set of four antique French fashion engravings captures the extraordinary elegance—and exuberance—of early 19th-century Paris. Each engraving is hand colored and beautifully presented in its original-style French mat and gilt frame, depicting the fashionable men and women known as the Incroyables et Merveilleuses. Larger and more substantial than the fashion plates typically produced for magazines, these engravings were made on a grander scale for collectors. Together, they make a remarkable display of French fashion and history.

The engravings were produced in Paris in the early 1800s by Georges-Jacques Gatine, after drawings by Horace Vernet and Louis-Marie Lanté. Gatine's Incroyable et Merveilleuse engravings are highly regarded as important records of French fashion from this fascinating period, and examples can be found in museums in France, England, and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each framed engraving measures 16 3/4" x 12 3/4". A truly special set if you are a collector of French decorative arts, fashion history, or beautiful things with a story to tell.
