Details

This 1940s shellwork box has an almost jewel-like quality, it's the kind of treasure that invites you to look closer. Natural shells cover the wooden lid and sides in an intricate arrangement of tiny spirals, delicate scallops, and larger shells, creating beautiful texture and dimension. The sculptural lid is especially striking, centered with a large fan shell and surrounded by smaller shells in ivory, blush, rose, and soft natural tones.

The combination of shells and color gives it an especially sophisticated presence. Decorative enough to stand on its own, it feels like the sort of personal treasure that becomes part of your lovely collected home. Inside, the original peachy-pink lining adds another beautiful layer of color giving the box an unexpectedly feminine touch, and makes opening the box just as lovely. Generously sized and wonderfully decorative, beautiful on a dressing table, writing desk, or library table. Display it with your collection of shells and antique souvenirs, where its unusual beauty can be appreciated from every angle.

  • Measures 7" x 5" x 3-1/2"h.

Collector’s Notes.

Shellwork souvenirs were popular with travelers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in seaside towns and port cities.

This box dates to the 1940s, when these charming shell-decorated treasures offered a lovely way to bring home a little bit of the seaside—and the memory of a special journey.
