Rare Signed Antique French Engraved Jewelry Box with Romantic Pastorale Courting Scene, Made in France

A rare and utterly charming antique French engraved jewelry box featuring a beautifully detailed romantic pastorale courting scene on the lid. Dating to the late 19th century, early 20th century, this elegant box stands on graceful bun feet and is decorated on every side with delicate scrolling foliate ornament. The lid is truly spectacular. The finely executed engraving depicts a young couple in an idyllic garden with classical statuary. The gentleman gently holds a small bird while the young lady reaches toward it, a tender moment symbolizing love and devotion in the romantic imagery of the period.

The artistry is exceptional, with remarkable detail throughout the scene. The engraving bears the initials A.P. along with a small artist’s signature, adding both intrigue and individuality to this lovely work of art. The underside is marked Made in France. The velvet lining was professionally replaced at some point during its long life and provides a beautiful place to safeguard treasured jewels and keepsakes. I have searched extensively and have not been able to find another example with such a beautifully executed signed narrative engraving, making this a particularly delightful and increasingly difficult piece to find.

A romantic and decorative treasure for your boudoir, vanity, or writing desk.

Collector’s Note

Finely engraved French dresser boxes such as this were created by skilled artisans during the late 19th century, when romantic imagery inspired by 18th-century French art was especially fashionable. Scenes of garden courtship, music, and pastoral life celebrated the elegance and poetry of young love. Signed examples with narrative engraving of this quality are increasingly difficult to find and are especially prized by collectors of antique French vanity objects and boudoir accessories.
