Early 19th Century Georgian Staffordshire Pearlware Scenic Plate, an heirloom addition to your collection. Made by R. Hall, who made earthenware at the Swan Bank pottery works, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, England from 1822-1840. Surrounded by a gorgeous fruit and floral border, the romantic center scene shows a woman, child and shepherd boy sheltering under a large tree. The woman has her arms around the child, three sheep are huddled close by. Dark rain clouds loom over the town in the background.
Based on an antique engraved print by the artist Joseph Singleton from 1799, it is exhibited in the British Museum. This romantic design is done in varying shades of blue, from deep cobalt to lighter blue. The tree, under which they shelter, is broken by age but has new growth springing up, signifying hope. In beautiful condition for a plate from the very early 1800's, small edge wear, a stunning plate.
