Shell work souvenirs were sold in European port cities and often purchased by sailors to bring home to their mothers, wives, or sweethearts—a small reminder of where they had been and of someone waiting at home. Tiny shells were carefully arranged across the surface of this lovely box, surrounding a distinctive diamond-shaped pincushion covered in rich wine-colored silk.
It would be lovely on your bedside table holding a few treasured pieces of jewelry, on your writing desk, or simply nestled among your collection of antique boxes and objects gathered over time. The more than 100-year-old box has plenty of charm and character, with its delicate shellwork and beautiful silk top. The corners of the lid are loose, as is to be expected with an antique of this age.
