Details

I couldn’t resist the wonderful color on this antique Majolica plate. Three maple branches spread across the surface, their raised leaves painted in an unexpected mix of rosy pink, green, brown and cream. It has that wonderfully exuberant Victorian look that makes Majolica so much fun to collect—and this one is especially pretty displayed with other botanical pieces.

Made by Griffin, Smith & Hill of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania in the 1880s, the plate bears the impressed GSH mark on the back. I love the combination of the natural maple leaf design and those slightly unusual colors. It would be lovely hung on a wall, displayed on a shelf, or mixed into your collection of antique Majolica. The plate has lovely age-appropriate craquelure and natural variations in the glaze and rim consistent with its age.

Collector’s Notes.

Griffin, Smith & Hill was one of America’s important Majolica makers in the 1880s, known especially for naturalistic designs inspired by leaves, flowers and other forms from nature.

Their maple-leaf pieces are particularly charming—and the impressed GSH mark makes this one easy to identify.
