Details

There are always a few special finds that make a room feel collected over time, each with its own personality and a story to tell. This antique hand-carved wooden horse and rider is one of those appealing discoveries. The expressive carving, the rider's distinctive silhouette, and the beautifully mellowed brown, green, and blue-green paint give this little equestrian sculpture a character all its own. Its stepped wooden base adds just the right amount of presence, making it a wonderful accent for your library, desk, or cabinet filled with the things you have gathered on your travels. For a home with books, paintings, well-loved antiques, and the occasional unexpected treasure, it brings an engaging touch of equestrian charm without feeling overly formal.

The flat back allows it to sit neatly against a wall or toward the back of a shelf, where it can be enjoyed alongside other favorite objects. The original painted surface shows the gentle wear of age, and two small indentations remain in the base where attachments once were. A piece like this adds an individual note to any room, especially when mixed with French and English antiques, old books, and the furnishings collected over many years. Whether your home is a gracious Southern interior, a relaxed country house, or a traditional study, this charming horse and rider is a lovely find for someone who appreciates the character that only time can give an object.

  • Measures 8-3/8" x 4" x 6-7/8"h.

The horse has long held a special place in the decorative arts, appearing in everything from formal equestrian portraits to folk carvings and personal objects made to be admired at home. Wooden figures such as this bring a more intimate, tactile quality to the subject. They invite us to look beyond grand works of art and appreciate the hand of the maker, the character of the carving, and the appeal of an object that has survived to be enjoyed by another generation.

For collectors who love interiors with a little individuality, equestrian pieces are especially lovely mixed among books, paintings, and other treasured finds.
