Beautiful Antique Hand Carved Gesso and Wood Gilt Cherub Standing Mirror - late 18th century early 19th century. Hand carved frame is embellished with a cherub at the crown and a shell design at the bottom of the frame. The frame has all the expressive scrolls and classic curves with a polychromed and patinated gilt finish. Frames like this were often placed on altars in churches, to symbolize the concept of self-reflection and introspection, allowing the faithful to examine their inner selves and spiritual state in the light of God's teachings.
Underground of red paint shows through, the colors are stunning. Age appropriate distressing and repairs, in good condition with replacement mirror, papered backing replaced the splitting board, done by previous owners.
