This wonderful 19th-century French walnut oil jar has the generous, rounded shape that makes old French country pottery so appealing. Hand-thrown in rural France, this substantial vessel was originally made to hold walnut oil in a French kitchen. Today, its beautiful proportions and timeworn surface make it just as lovely displayed on a kitchen shelf, sideboard, or console.
The ribbed body and softly rounded form are enhanced by an old hand-applied glaze, with natural variations, gentle crackling, and the irregularities that come from being made and used by hand. I especially love the way the glaze has settled into the ribs of the pottery, giving the piece depth and character. It is an authentic piece of French provincial pottery—useful in its original life, and wonderfully decorative today. Pair it with other antique French pottery for a collected look, or let its sculptural shape stand on its own.
