Details

A beautiful French vase does not need to wait for a special occasion. This generously sized Vieux Paris porcelain vase, dating to the 19th century, is hand painted with delicate pink roses and small flowers against a luminous white ground, with graceful handles and fine pink detailing. At nearly eleven inches tall, it has the presence to hold its own on a mantel or console, but feels equally at home bringing flowers to your dining table.

I love the way its graceful shape and delicate decoration look simply displayed on a mantel, where it becomes part of the room rather than merely a container for flowers. The fire glowing below, candlelight beside it, and a mirror reflecting the chandelier above create the kind of setting where an antique feels completely at home. Filled with garden flowers or seasonal branches, it would be equally beautiful on the dining table.

Collector’s Notes.

“Vieux Paris,” or Old Paris porcelain, is a collector's term used for porcelain made and decorated by a number of independent Paris-area manufacturers and workshops during the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Much of this porcelain was left unmarked, making the decoration, form, and workmanship important clues to its origin and period. Hand-painted floral decoration was a popular feature of Paris porcelain throughout the 19th century.
