Made as a keepsake to carry home, this antique French shellwork souvenir box has the romance of a journey woven into its story. Shellwork souvenirs were sold in European port cities and often purchased by sailors to bring home to their mothers, wives, or sweethearts—a small reminder of where they had been and of someone waiting at home. Its unusual eight-sided form is covered in delicate shellwork, with four wider sides and four narrow sides fitted with tiny mirrors. The entire top is finished with a green silk pincushion.
Small enough to display almost anywhere, it would be lovely on your dressing table, writing desk, or with your collection of antique boxes and treasured shells. Rare to find with mirrors, they catch the light beautifully. The green silk brings a graceful touch of color to the intricate shellwork.
