An antique French fil de fer basket, hand-formed in fine wire, centered with a rare marbled faience plate by Sarreguemines. The colors of the faience marbrée in lavender and bright green is what stopped me in my tracks! Soft lavender swirls move across the glaze in gentle, flowing layers, this is a beautiful example of late 1800's faience marbrée.
The contrast is what makes it special — the light, open wirework made by an artist's hands, paired with the soft movement of the ceramic center. Both useful and decorative, just as it was over 100 years ago in a French kitchen or service room. Age has given the wire a lovely patina, the glaze is just as glossy as when it was first fired on. This is such a rare French piece, it will bring such a spark to your collection.
