This antique English shellwork sewing box is a wonderful example of the Victorian love of seaside souvenirs and intricate shellwork. Generously covered with a variety of shells, with a charming chromolithograph print and a green silk-covered pincushion adding color and character. The slanted shape and sides are finished in a woven seagrass make this one a stand out, the interior has its original paper lining.
A box like this was meant to be both useful and treasured, keeping sewing necessities close at hand while serving as a beautiful reminder of a seaside holiday or journey. The pin cushion silk has splits in it as shown, we have not recovered it as I know many of you prefer the original state. This box dates to the late 1800s early 1900s.
