Antique Bohemian Turquoise Glass Tumblers, Décoration à la Neige Boy & Girl Pair

I fell in love with this pair while sourcing antiques in France. This rare and beautifully matched pair of antique Bohemian turquoise glass tumblers carries both the charm of 19th-century European craftsmanship and the story of careful family stewardship across generations This particular pair comes with a history of thoughtful preservation. Because this luminous shade of Bohemian cerulean blue is so rare, the family of the original collector had a small edge flake on one glass professionally polished and smoothed by a specialist. This careful conservation ensures the piece remains stable, safe to handle, and beautifully balanced within the pair—reflecting just how deeply it has been cherished and protected over time.

Painted in the classic décoration à la neige (snow decoration) technique, this exceptional pair features enchanting, hand-painted white layered enamel silhouettes of a young girl on one tumbler and a young boy on the other. They are a true facing pair, intentionally created to gaze toward one another when displayed side by side. The enamel artwork features rich, layered highlights that give the silhouettes a soft, tactile, three-dimensional depth against the glowing turquoise glass.

These tumblers reflect the finest qualities of late 19th-century Bohemian glassmaking: thin, mouth-blown turquoise glass with a softly paneled form, tiny air bubbles that speak to their hand-blown origins, and smoothly polished, ground pontil marks on each base—a subtle signature of authentic hand craftsmanship. A rare and beautifully matched companion pair, they are a wonderful addition to your antique glass collection and they will be admired every time the light catches the glowing turquoise glass.

Collector’s Note

What sets this pair apart is the quality of early Bohemian craftsmanship. These tumblers are mouth-blown in thin turquoise glass with a softness and light transmission that later factory production cannot replicate. The enamel work is finely layered, with a delicacy of brushwork and dimensional depth rarely achieved in mass-produced examples, where decoration tends to be flatter and more uniform.

Each base retains a smoothly polished, ground pontil mark, confirming individual hand production rather than mold-pressed manufacture.
