One of my favorites from my own collection, this impressive 19th century Staffordshire ironstone tureen was made by William Brownfield in the mid-1800s. The bold black foliate design against the pristine white ironstone feels wonderfully graphic and surprisingly modern, which is exactly what I love about it. It looks beautiful surrounded by antiques, but I can just as easily imagine it mixed with contemporary pieces for a fresh, collected table. With its generous size and striking decoration, it makes a beautiful statement on a dining table, kitchen island, or open shelf.
After more than 170 years, this early tureen has the honest signs of a life well lived at gracious tables. There is a chip along the edge of the lid where the ladle fits, along with a small, very stable old hairline on the lid. Neither diminishes the wonderful decorative presence of this rare survivor, but I want you to know exactly what you are bringing home. Please choose this one only if you appreciate the character, history, and imperfections that make an antique feel as though it has a story of its own.
