Antique French Hand Painted Pink Oyster Plate which features 6 oyster shells open on a bed of seaweed. The center well holds sauce. Each oyster well is pink on the top and soft yellow at the tip. A hand painted ‘oyster scar’ is in the center of each well, just like if you had already scraped the oyster out.
Dates to the late 1800’s, oyster plates in this design were made both in majolica and porcelain. As with many early oyster plates, there is no mark on the back. In wonderful condition for its age, no chips or cracks, there is a small darker dot in one of the shells from a small glaze pop – not unusual in these early oyster plates.
