This antique treen mortar has such a wonderful shape. Turned on a lathe in a graceful footed form, it has simple incised decoration around the bowl and a beautiful warm patina that only comes with age. The wood has developed its own character over the years, including gentle age splits and a bowl that has shrunk slightly out of round.

Originally made as an apothecary’s mortar, today I love it simply as a decorative piece. It would be wonderful on a desk holding a few favorite pens, filled with feathers, or displayed on a stack of old books. Small antique treen pieces like this add warmth and texture wherever they are placed, and this one has a particularly lovely presence. When you hold it, you can sense the care and love that went into making this.

Treen refers to small household and workshop objects turned or carved from wood, and antique treen is especially loved for the beautiful patina that develops through years of use and handling.
