The Fragrance of Grasse, France: A Visit to the World’s Perfume Capital

Flowers, fragrance, and a little inspiration from one of my favorite places in the south of France.

There are places in France that make you want to slow down and stay a little longer. Grasse is one of them. If you love France, antiques, flowers, and the pleasures of a well-lived home, Grasse is a place worth putting on your list.

Set in the hills above the Côte d’Azur, Grasse is known around the world as the perfume capital of France.

What I love most is the town itself—its winding streets, colorful old buildings, flowers spilling from gardens, and that wonderful feeling of being somewhere with centuries of history.

The old part of town is very picturesque, and this little town seems to have kept that slower pace of life, despite having over 1 million visitors per year!

The Notre-Dame-du-Puy Cathedral is one of Grasse's most important landmarks. Dating largely from the 13th century, it has a beautiful, timeworn presence and houses an interesting collection of paintings, including works by Rubens and Fragonard.

As someone who loves antiques, I notice the details: an old doorway, worn stone steps, an iron balcony, the faded color of a centuries-old building. These are the things that stay with me long after I return home.

A French Town with a Long Love Affair with Flowers 

Grasse’s connection to perfume goes back centuries. Its mild climate and fertile countryside were ideal for growing fragrant flowers, particularly roses, jasmine and tuberose.

By the 18th century, Grasse had become an important center of the French perfume industry. That tradition continues today, with historic perfume houses, museums, workshops, and gardens devoted to the art of fragrance.

I love that connection between flowers and fragrance. Something that begins in a garden can eventually become a scent that someone treasures for years.

It feels very French to me.

That's why Grasse is so appealing. It isn't only about perfume. It's about noticing and appreciating beautiful things—the flowers growing around you, the architecture, the food, the scent in the air.

The Perfume of Grasse

Of course, you can't come to Grasse without discovering its perfume.

The International Perfume Museum, or Musée International de la Parfumerie, is a wonderful place to learn about the history of fragrance and the ingredients, techniques, and traditions behind it.

The museum's gardens are especially lovely. They give you a chance to experience some of the flowers that have made Grasse famous, rather than simply reading about them.

And then there are the historic perfume houses.

Fragonard, Molinard, and Galimard all have deep roots in Grasse and offer visitors the opportunity to learn more about perfume-making. Some offer workshops where you can even create your own fragrance.

I think experiences like this are one of the best reasons to travel.

You don't just see some beautiful things and places and take photographs. You learn a little about how it came to be—and you carry that story home with you.

A large percentage of all fragrance flowers and oils for the world's perfumes. The flowers used by Chanel for the iconic No. 5 perfume are grown in Grasse.

Bringing a Little Grasse Home

Grasse stayed with me long after I left—not only for its winding streets and colorful buildings, but for the flowers and fragrance that are such an important part of the town’s identity.
