The Art of Beautiful Gift Wrapping
There are few things more charming than receiving a beautifully wrapped gift.
Growing up in Europe, the presentation was always part of the pleasure. Beautiful paper, a lovely ribbon, perhaps a little greenery or a handwritten note could make even a simple gift feel like an occasion.
That's still the spirit behind beautiful gift wrapping today. It doesn't need to be elaborate or perfectly coordinated. The loveliest packages feel personal, thoughtful, and beautifully considered.
Begin with Beautiful Paper
Beautiful paper is the foundation. You really don't need twenty different rolls of wrapping paper. I usually keep a variety of high quality gift wrap on hand. But I'm just as likely to wrap gifts in regular, kraft paper.
Simple papers in soft white, ivory, muted colors, or understated patterns become a beautiful backdrop for whatever you choose to add, and the same paper can feel completely different with a new ribbon or seasonal detail.
As a young wife, I went a little crazy with gift wrapping. In my early 20's, I wanted each gift to be perfect. So much so, that sometimes it literally took me a day {and night} to think of the perfect combination of paper and ribbon. I mean, seriously!
These days, I still love a beautifully wrapped gift, but it's got to be easy to do, and no sleepless nights thinking of the right combination of paper and ribbons etc. Because at the end of the day, while there are people who cherish all that perfection, most of my family and friends just rip the paper off and want to get to the actual gift!
Let the Ribbon Set the Mood
The right ribbon can completely change the feeling of a package.
A silky satin brings softness and sheen. A wider woven ribbon feels more tailored, while patterned or textured ribbons add personality. Sometimes a beautiful color is all you need to make simple paper feel special.
You don't need a complicated bow. A generous, beautifully shaped bow can be the perfect finishing touch. {That's why I choose mostly French wired ribbons for our ribbon collectioin-it makes it so easy to make stunning bows!}
I also love letting the ribbon introduce a little contrast rather than trying to make every element match. A beautiful ribbon against simple paper can be much more elegant than too many decorations competing for attention.
Add Something from the Season
Some of the loveliest finishing touches can be found outside the door.
A sprig of olive, rosemary, eucalyptus, herbs, dried flowers, or seasonal greenery can be slipped beneath a ribbon. In autumn, a few muted branches or warm seasonal tones make a package especially inviting.
The secret is restraint. One beautiful natural element is often enough.
Don't Forget Baker's Twine
Baker's twine is one of those simple little details that can make a package feel wonderfully personal.

Make the Tag Personal
A gift tag is a small detail, but it can make a beautifully wrapped package feel much more personal. Choose an elegant shape or beautiful paper, and whenever possible, write the recipient's name by hand.
I especially love oversized tags because they feel a little unexpected and become part of the presentation. A handwritten name says something that a printed label never quite can: this was chosen especially for you.
