19th Century Black Lacquer Papier Mache Brackets with Gilt Chinoiserie Decoration

19th Century Black Lacquer Papier Mache Brackets with Gilt Chinoiserie Decoration, beautiful examples of the decorative art. These are exceptional 19th century papier mâché art works in the form of a pair of brackets, decorated with gold Chinoiserie scenes on black lacquer. The Chinoiserie craze swept France in the 1800’s, leading to the French production of paper mache decorative accents.

Beautifully hand painted in gold with a delicate chinoiserie scene of terraced pagoda buildings amongst trees and foliage with figures dressed in traditional costumes in the foreground. The color of the gold is a lovely mellow old-world gold, the photos show them to be a little lighter bright gold due to the reflection. The brackets were designed to hang on a wall to hold small decorative art works, they fold flat, they have a hook and eye feature to make them into the bracket configuration. A beautiful set, sure to delight.

  • 2 brackets 9″ x 6″ x 3-1/2″.
