Celebrating the Red, White & Blue

Happy 4th of July! Can you believe the Fourth of July is here? How does each year fly by so fast?! We’re having a very low-key celebration today, yesterday we sailed out on the boat to a harbor close by, dropped anchor and had dinner on the boat. When it got dark, we watched the fireworks over the ocean a day early. I set our table in the back garden for an easy BBQ dinner Celebrating the Red, White & Blue.

Thank you for joining me!

Celebrating the Red, White & Blue

Pam, Mary and I are excited to welcome our friend Sarah of Hyacinths for the Soul today to celebrate summer and patriotic summery floral designs.

We’re embracing all the summer time vibes here at FrenchGardenHouse, with lots of family and friends over to visit and the enjoy the beach, the garden, and the great weather.  This table setting is one that I can easily pull together for repeat {Bastille Day is July 14th!} using mix and match antique pieces and different linens. {you can too!} The back patio is perfect for eating outdoors, the table there can seat 12 comfortably. It’s my dining room that we don’t have inside the house.

4th of July table setting

While I have my “fancier” ideas at times for table settings indoors, outside it’s usually much more casual, leaning towards the French Country side.  This table is a mix of antique and new, English plates with French antique pottery, ironstone and transfer ware.

Our sunny back garden is the backdrop for this red, white and blue table. Shade cloth overhead creates a dappled sunlight, so it’s not dark but not too hot either.

I used an antique French blue and white mattress ticking as the cloth. This one is in such beautiful condition, I just couldn’t bear to cut it for pillows or something. So it’s draped over my table. I love seeing the hand stitched seams!

The beautiful napkins are natural linen with a red stripe {they’re new!}, the 1940’s English red transfer plates are topped with blue and white deep Staffordshire plates from the 1800’s. The flatware is a favorite of both Mary’s and mine, it’s my every day here, it’s Napoleon Bee by Wallace.

The antique French Country blue painted garden caddy is being re-purposed as a drinks caddy today, holding a bottle of French Lillet, and little glasses for a refreshing summer drink.

red white and blue flowers

My flowers celebrate the red, white and blue! This blue and white antique stoneware pitcher is the perfect match for my bouquet of white alstroemerias, blue thistle flowers, and little red dianthus blooms.

I put the flowers and an antique ironstone compote filled with summery strawberries and blueberries on a stack of antique blue and white platters for extra interest.  {side note…haha…I really wanted all my straws to face to the right for these photos! The wind had another idea. When entertaining outdoors you have to go with what Mother Nature says, no matter what .}

Summer’s fruits are my go to dessert for summery meals. They are in season, sweet without any sugar, and everyone loves them!

This is such an easy to pull together table setting for summer. Mix and match what you have, or buy some antique pieces to mix in with your contemporary dishes and/or flatware.

  1. Happy Independence Day Lidy! I love your mix of red, white and blue, antique and new! Your table in your garden is casual summer dining at its best. Your antique French blue and white mattress ticking provides the perfect foundation and tablecloth and I adore your mix and match layers of platters and transferware. Our favorite bee flatware is perfect for garden dining and I love how you repurposed your garden caddy for drinks. Your Morning Glory Tankard Pitcher is a beauty…swoon! I love the addition of the thistle, like an exploding fireworks display of blue color.
We plan on boating and dropping anchor tonight to the watch the fireworks too if they don’t get rained out with potential thunderstorms in the forecast…fingers crossed. As always it’s a treat to join you for some flower therapy. Wishing you a wonderful Fourth. <3

    1. Happy 4th, Mary! I hope you get to go out on the pontoon and watch fireworks…I’m crossing my fingers!! I hope you have a wonderful holiday, friend.

  2. Happy 4th of July, Lidy.
Love your mix of old and new,it’s picture perfect.
Where do you get your inspiration from?

    1. Thank you Anja! : ) The antiques and flowers do all the work, I just shuffle things around.

  3. Happy Independence Day, Lidy! Your table set in your garden is so inviting and I would so enjoy a seat to celebrate the red, white, and blue. The antique ironstone pitcher is the perfect vessel for alstroemeria, thistle, and dianthus. I always love fruit, but especially in the summer. Strawberries, blueberries, and watermelon make a perfect and light dessert. The antique mattress ticking is a wonderful and casual foundation for your beautiful collection of old and new. It must be heaven to live near the ocean and enjoy boating. We visited with friends at the lake last night for dinner and fireworks. Today, we will celebrate with family at our house.

Wishing you and John a lovely 4th. It is always a pleasure to join you for Monday Morning Blooms and flower therapy!

    1. Thank you Pam! How fun to be visiting friends by a lake and fireworks!! I hope you and Butch and your family have a very happy 4th.

  4. Lidy, Happy 4th of July! I’ll eagerly join you in this gorgeous garden setting. It’s so hot here in TX, I don’t even want to venture outside. Actually a day on the water sounds perfect too. I miss our days of sailing and then anchoring for a picnic dinner.
It goes without saying that I adore your French vibe! I always smile at the thought of the French at meal time, gathered casually around a long table, laughing, talking, eating, and drinking. The rest of the world stops! All is focused on the meal and community around the table. I love that about the French!
Your antique pieces pull at my heart strings. That blue and white stoneware pitcher is so charming! I love the fresh fruit gracing the table. It adds beautiful color and texture along with the simple red, white, and blue flowers. All perfection!
Thank you for inviting me to join in today. I’m honored! You girls are the best!

    1. Sarah, thank you again for joining us today, you are always such an inspiration! Your patriotic tablesetting is so beautiful, and great fun! Happy Independence Day!

A wonderful article as always, Lidy!
Thank you for the inspiration and Happy July 4th!

    1. Thank you Janet! Wishing you and your family a wonderful day celebrating the Red, White & Blue. Hope it’s not too hot over there!

  6. Lidy, Your arrangement is so pretty. My eye went to the blue thistle right away. I love it with the sweet dianthus and alstroemeria in your antique pitcher.
I enjoyed seeing more of your garden setting. The French bistro chairs are so charming and the antique fabric used as a table cloth adds your special panache.
Antique dishes in red, white, and blue and beautiful fruit in patriotic colors are very inviting.
    Happy Fourth of July.

    1. Happy 4th of July Bonnie! Red white and blue are so refreshing in the summer time, aren’t they? Wishing you a gorgeous day today, friend.

  7. Love your California and French style to the utmost, Lidy! That ticking fabric and pitcher are fabulous, as are the florals you chose for the red, white and blue. I don’t know why but I love thistle! And how appropriate that we would eat off of English transferware on Independence Day. 😉 Happy 4th….and Bastille Day!

    1. Thank you Rita! I don’t know why I love thistle either, I usually don’t go for spikey…but this one I always buy when it’s available. Happy Independence Day! I hope you have a wonderful day with people you love.xo Lidy
