Antique Brown & White 1850's Transfer Plates Set of 8, made by Robert Cochran & Co, Verreville Pottery, Glasgow. The pottery was founded in 1845 and in operation for 27 years. These plates are remarkable survivors from the height of the Victorian era: any kind of set is so rare to find in the coveted "Syria" pattern. An expression of the period's romanticism, capturing the European fascination with distant exotic lands. Each plate has a central scene with a serene landscape, and wide, ornate borders.
To find a set of eight in this pattern and condition is exceptionally rare. This is a 'collected' set lovingly put together by someone who loved the romance of this design. The plates bear the authentic patina of age, they have different back stamps from different years they were made, and some are lighter than others. Four have a chip on the rim as shown, one has under foot chips, speaking to their journey through time without compromising their decorative integrity. This set represents a significant acquisition for the serious collector of English and Scottish pottery and a stunning decorative statement for your sophisticated interior.
