Antique Sepia Studio Portrait of Young Boy Wearing a Skirt. Meet James Howard Giles Gibs. Can you just hear him?! “Ah, Ma, do I hafta wear that skirt and stand there like a sissy?” Young boys wore skirts until a certain age in the 1800’s, and this wool suit is a perfect example of that. Young James is wearing a ruffled cotton shirt, his Sunday best bow, and high button-up boots. His straw best hat is next to him on the table.
I have been collecting antique photographs of children for a long time, this one is one of my all time favorites. Somehow I think you can see on James’ face that he really wants to live in an era of overalls, bare feet and frogs! The photo card is a bit worn, as shown, it is marked A. Morse, Irving Park, Chicago on the front in gilt lettering.
