From the flea market, this Antique French Gilt Ormolu Jewelry Casket with beveled glass top has seen some years. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s these boxes were sold as Grand Tour Souvenirs to traveling nobility or wealthy tourists. This one has been well loved and well used, the gold has worn off and at one time the owner added touches of gilt painted on.
The glass is set in diamond pointe gold plated brass, which has patina and aging. The little red pillow has blue enameled buttons, they have wear, no doubt from jewelry rubbing against the enamel. Kissed by the grace of time, this is a little piece of French history. It may not stand as straight as it did when it was made, but it is over 100 years old. A shabby flea market treasure.
