Exceptional Antique French Madonna, hand carved in the early 19th century of French Pipe Clay, often called Meerschaum. Beyond beautiful, this work of art has a Madonna, La Vierge a la Chaise, after the 1514 painting by the Italian renaissance artist Raphael. It depicts Mary embracing the child Christ, while the young John the Baptist devoutly watches.
This 1800’s piece is a fine heirloom example of the highly skilled art of carving, Mary’s face is delicate and astoundingly fine, her countenance is so loving, her gown so detailed, each fold carved with great care and precision. Set into an ebonized oval wood frame, covered with the original bombe curved glass. The curved glass has tiny bubbles inside, as is expected, you may see some little spots in the photos, these are not on the carving inside, and not noticeable to the eye in “real life.”
Has achieved the warm cream coloration that is so beloved by collectors of these quality relics. Highly detailed and decorative, quite rare to find this large size, they are avidly collected. The frame has wear and repairs as shown. A fabulous addition to your collection of religious antiques, display with your missals and santos. Signed Fontaan.
