Antique Cut Glass Sweatmeat Jar

$175.00

Availability: 1 in stock

Antique Cut Glass Sweatmeat Jar, with a heavily cut body, scalloped rim, and round cut top.  A beautiful find, from a collection, this is a well made heavy piece.   Dating to around 1820, this has a faceted foot, incised under the bottom. Plenty of lovely details, the domed lid has a flower design on the very top.

These early sweetmeat jars or urns would most likely have held candied fruit in syrup, to be taken out with a slender silver ladle or spoon for serving. An impressive piece, it does have two small dark inclusions in the bottom as shown.  The top has two nicks, from that time that a new footman served his first tea at the estate, and sadly dropped the lid from nerves. Please only adopt if you can forgive this beauty that!
