Antique Chalkware Sheep Pair, bought in Europe, these late 19th century French Chalkware Putz Sheep are my weakness. Anywhere and everywhere, if I see chalkware sheep, I buy them! {I confess very few make it to the shop} But my flock is getting a little out of hand, so I’m happy to share a few for this season with you.
Little sheep like this were, at the time they were made, quite beloved to add to the nativity scene, a must for almost every Christian French family. These two are not perfect, one is missing her tiny ear, and part of a leg, but they were probably carefully played with when Maman wasn’t looking so it’s a miracle they are in the condition they are in. Small in size, huge in history, memories of a child’s wonder of Christmas. Use them for your own creche scene, or display on a stack of holiday books or on your mantel.
