Antique 19th Century Cast Iron Parlor Stove Urn, in an exceptional design. This decorative urn with lid is such a fun find from the past! Part of a cast iron parlor stove, which were beloved in prosperous mid-19th-century households. This is the urn that was set right above the firebox in a special indented place, it was filled with water and used as a humidifier. The water was often “spiced or perfumed,” which helped to scent the air inside and offset the dry air caused by the hot stove.

The urn is very decorative by itself. The lid, with all its perforations, also make this a perfect piece for flower arranging! It’s what I first thought of when I saw this at a recent brocante. In good condition for its age {1830-1840} one of the scallops has the tip missing.  Fascinating piece of history, when gathering around the stove was the height of luxury!
