Stunning 19th Century Country Pottery Bowl, with wear, discoloration, and all sorts of chips brings a touch of rustic charm and timeless craftsmanship to your collection. This one captured my heart immediately with it's worn surface, patina and history. Hand-thrown and kiln-fired, this piece showcases the simple beauty and utility of rural pottery from the 1800s. Its warm, earthy glaze—rich with age and character—speaks to decades of use in a country cuisine, where form and function came together in everyday life.
In the 19th century, stoneware and porcelain bowls were revered, all but the very rich had their pieces repaired. There were many different methods for repairing pieces, and various china menders advertised their skills and assured their work. This bowl has been 'repaired' on the chipped edge with a sort of hardened dark glue and pottery substance, so that it could still be used for food preparation. {I don't recommend that now, pls. use this only for display purposes.}
These imperfections highlight its country origins and give it a unique, one-of-a-kind presence. Whether displayed on a shelf or used as a centerpiece, this bowl evokes the quiet elegance of early country living. It's a rare treat to find a bowl of this size in this glorious condition. There is a mark on the bottom, but I have not been able to identify it.
