Antique English Sardine Server Mappin & Webb Silver Plate Cut Crystal

An antique English sardine server by Mappin & Webb, beautifully detailed and full of character, the kind of piece that instantly brings a table to life. Renowned Mappin & Webb were the silversmiths to royalty and one of Britain's most prestigious names in fine silver. Made of heavy silver plate, it’s richly decorated with scrolling repoussé work and set on a raised base with elegant scrolled feet. The lid is topped with a sculpted shell finial—one of those classic maritime details that gives it such a distinctive, collected feel.

Inside, it still holds its original cut crystal liner, which is a real treat to find. The faceted crystal catches the light beautifully and gives the piece a soft sparkle when it’s open. The swing handle lifts up and down easily, keeping the silhouette clean and graceful. I would use this for a shrimp or crab dip, since I don't love sardines. This is one of those pieces you don’t just use—you live with it. It works beautifully on a styled table for entertaining, and is just as compelling when displayed in a cabinet or on a shelf where its detail can be appreciated daily.

Of note: one wing nut was professionally replaced long ago with a different fitting, and the crystal liner has two small nicks consistent with age and use. Beautifully preserved form with age consistent character

  • Measures 7" x 8" x 7-1/2"h.

Collector’s Note

Collectors are drawn to pieces like this for the way they combine fine English silver work with original fitted crystal, a detail often lost over time. The Mappin & Webb name adds strong heritage appeal, while the shell finial and ornate form reflect a period when even utilitarian serving pieces were designed with artistry and intention.
