Antique Victorian Book Their Wedding Journey, written by William Dean Howells. William Dean Howells was an American novelist, literary critic, and playwright, nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters". This was his first book, this copy is from 1894, it has a cream cover with gilt lettering and a hand painted pink rose bouquet on the center cover- it was a staff library copy, from Sawley Hall. There are 85 lovely black and white illustrations by Clifford Carleton. Gilt end papers and gilt top pages.

The story follows Basil and Isabel March on their honeymoon journey. It’s shortly after the Civil War and the honeymooners travel from Boston to New York and up the Hudson River and west to Rochester and Niagara Falls and along the Thousand Islands to Montreal and Quebec and south, home to Boston, going by carriage and train and boat.  They navigate through the trials and tribulations of their honeymoon trip, and face challenges that test the strength of their relationship. It's a wonderful history of the Victorian era and all the societal expectations of that period.  It has aging, bumped corners but is very readable and very enjoyable.
