A true treasure for the discerning collector, this exceptionally rare two-compartment Ironstone serving bowl, complete with its original fitted metal lid, is a historical artifact. Pieces of this size and unique design, especially retaining their original lid, are almost impossible to find outside of a museum collection. Bowls of this size with their original lid are almost impossible to find, I've never seen one outside of a museum.
Large, heavy, the two compartments make this a very unusual design. The fitted hand hammered metal lids {I think they are tin} have been cleaned and are a dark almost pewter-like color, they close well. 19th century, this piece embodies the period's commitment to both utility and elegant presentation. The bowl has been used, there is staining inside after more than a century of most likely daily use, and it has an old repair and a chip as shown. These do not show when the lid is closed. We have chosen to leave this as is, it's part of this beautiful and so exceptionally rare to find bowl. What a stellar addition to your collection!
