Antique French Country Wood Foot Stove

Antique French Country Wood Foot Stove, from the early 1800's, a hand carved oak, hand made box with decorative perforations on the top. Foot stoves like this were used from the 1600's and onward in France and all over Europe in winter. Placing a faience bowl in the bottom {the front slides up for this purpose} filled with glowing coals from the fire, you would sit with your feet on the little "stove" for warmth.

Long garments {a skirt or chamber coat for gentlemen} worn and placed over the stove on the ground increased the effect of this simple heating device. Many paintings from the 17th century in museums show little stoves like this. Wear, patina, and that softness only centuries old wood will have. A charming accent for your home, to use as a little work of art, to display on a shelf, or perhaps as a base for a French figure.
